Issue Four Is OUT NOW!

Picture
We find ourselves at the dawn of a new year, and a new decade.  The coming decade will no doubt see much focus on issues of the environment, most notably climate change and peak oil.  There is a direct link in Aotearoa between the agriculture industry and environmental destruction.  With over 30 million sheep and 10 million cows, the damage is measurable.

The industry is responsible for approximately half of all greenhouse gases emitted.  Most of this is methane emitted by livestock.  The proposed Emissions Trading Scheme gives exemption to the agriculture industry.  This pattern of behaviour has also been witnessed many times when farms have been found as responsible for river pollution, but given stupidly long periods of time to stop their actions.  ‘Our’ economy depends upon their profits.  ‘Our’ economy is soaked in the blood of cows, sheep, deer, chickens, lab animals, etc that are seen as tools to sate our desires.  ‘Our’ economy is also destroying Aotearoa’s environment.  And those who presently profit from it are unwilling to change their ways if the alternative leaves them a bit out of pocket - or possibly because of their ego.

The links between human rights, animal rights, and environmental sustainability are there for all to see.  We need to take personal responsibility, and then we must hold those unwilling to change as accountable for their actions.  We must point out the hypocrisies, the atrocities and the outright lies.  We must make all of our actions count, and keep ourselves true to the ideals of equality.

This issue is packed full of inspiring accounts, practical information, the beginning of an exciting three part security guide, and our newly founded ‘Letters to the Editor’.  We wish to thank everyone for their support during 2009, and may 2010 be a productive and safe year for us all - I know we’re feeling good about it.
